Time: 6am start
Course Description: Participants in the 50km event will complete three loops – the first a 10k loop is the same as the Lightning Strike 10k course. The 10km course comprises of a route that skirts around the lower slopes of Mt Stromlo, providing some beautiful scenery with a few undulations, but nothing overly gruelling. The second loop is a 20km loop and is more challenging as runners travel around the western part of Stromlo Forest featuring amazing views of the Brindabella mountains before ascending the western side of Mt Stromlo to take in all of the glory of Canberra. Some of the major climbs will provide a test for all runners and include the “Out-Back”, “The Prelude” and “The Mother”, runners then descend a fast few kms back to the event hub before undertaking the third loop. The second loop is the same as the 30k course. The third loop – the final 20km loop travels east along the Molonglo River and climbs through the Arboretum to the top of Dairy Farmers hill, providing a stunning view of Lake Burley Griffin, before returning through pine forests to the event hub and the well-deserved finish line. The course will be well marshalled and marked to ensure that runners can run carefree and find their way.
This event is a tough 50km race and from 2019 onwards has been opened up to even more avid trail runners to give it a go with a generous cut-off time of 9.5hrs. It is important that runners are aware that a strict cut-off time of 5.5 hours will be applied as competitors pass through the 30km point. Any runner outside this time will be considered to be a 30km event finisher.
Aid Station: Drink stations are approximately every 5-7km along the course and will provide water, Hammer Sports drink, and lollies.
Course Limits: The field will be limited to a maximum of 200 participants.
Performance Expectations: Runners will need to be trained up to run this event and finish in the 9.5 hours time limit. There is a cut off of 5.5 hours at the 30km mark.
